RATIONALE
- Assessment is simply a natural and expected part of the academic process.
- The assessment of specified goals maintains and supports the academic status of the arts.
- Documented assessment enhances the role and security of the arts in elementary and secondary schools.
PURPOSES OF ASSESSMENT
- to help students learn
- to monitor students' progress
- to motivate student learning
- to improve the quality of instruction
- to assist educators in evaluating their teaching
ASSESSMENT ISSUES
- When:
- Pretesting (placement; diagnostic)
- Formative (during the instructional process)
- Summative (at the end)
- Formal verses Informal
- Teacher Made verses Standardized
- Individual verses Group
- Learning Domains
- Skill/Performance (Psychomotor): State Contest, Festivals, Concerts, In-class Performances, sight-reading exams, pitch, matching, walking the steady beat.
- Knowledge (Cognitive): music concepts, analysis of performances, socio-cultural background of literature, etc.
- Feelings (Affective): Expressive Musical Decision-Making, Emotive Reactions to Units, Activities, Concerts; Reflections of accomplishments, Interviews of Fellow Students
