RATIONALE

  1. Assessment is simply a natural and expected part of the academic process.
  2. The assessment of specified goals maintains and supports the academic status of the arts.
  3. Documented assessment enhances the role and security of the arts in elementary and secondary schools.

PURPOSES OF ASSESSMENT

  1. to help students learn
  2. to monitor students' progress
  3. to motivate student learning
  4. to improve the quality of instruction
  5. to assist educators in evaluating their teaching

ASSESSMENT ISSUES

    1. Skill/Performance (Psychomotor): State Contest, Festivals, Concerts, In-class Performances, sight-reading exams, pitch, matching, walking the steady beat.
    2. Knowledge (Cognitive): music concepts, analysis of performances, socio-cultural background of literature, etc.
    3. Feelings (Affective): Expressive Musical Decision-Making, Emotive Reactions to Units, Activities, Concerts; Reflections of    accomplishments, Interviews of Fellow Students
